HEINEMANN Frameable Calendar and Landscape Photography Tutorial 2026 P h o t o g ra p h i n g T H E A RT O F N AT U R E ™ Whenwe think about and consider allof the elementsof visualdesign in the cre- ationof the fine art landscape image, the componentof light ismostoftenwhere we start; for light is the verydriver and creative influencerofour emotional re- sponse to the landscape. And, it is here, in thisplaceof response and feeling, that we begin to employ theother elements ofdesign thatwill enhance and support its expression. I cameupon this scene atnorthLakeWenatchee, nearLeavenworth inWash- ington Stateon adelightful Januarymorning, characterized by restrained, filtered sunlight from high cirrus clouds. My immediate response to this scenewas how soft anddreamy it appeared, as it literally causedme for a briefmoment to lapse into apleasant reverie.Had the cloudsnot been there, the sunlightwould have been considerably harsher, creating a more typical, prettypicturedocumentary style scenic image, andone less aestheticor inter- pretive andmuch less likely to engageone in an altered stateof reverie.Theother important element in this image is the bandof fog that gently hangs above the colorful, winter forest in themid-distance. Itprovides both a comp sitional and color contrast, but evenmore import- ant, itmetaphorically supports and enhances thepleasantdreaminess inherent in the scene. I wondered, is thiswhat awinter’sday in heaven looks and feels like? I’d like to think thatday I took home awonderful glimpseof awaitsme, and a knowing that there is heaven in land- scapephotography and landscapephotography in thatnextplace.SonyA7R body,Metabones Adapter,Canon24-70mm zoom lens. Mood is invariably a strong influencer ofour interpretationof the landscape and itsmeaning. Here, itsoften the inherent ambiguity anduncertainty that serve to capture bothour attention and imagination,As such, they leadus to draw conclusions, tomake senseoutof, or yet further, compelus to createour own storyornarrativeofwhatwe are seeing. Thus, moodmaypresent itself as a momentof revelation, orperhaps evenpersonal introspection.Mood can also conveymeta- phoric themes and concepts such as life, death, and resilience, as expressed here in this image of thewintery forest landscape along the SaukRiver inWashington State.Mood is a visual environmentwheremetaphoric themes and content find an elevated expressiveplatform. Thenuancesofmood are quiteoften expressed by thenuanceof color.Forme, mood is mostoften an expressionof hues and tonesof color, the farther they areoffprimary colors, the stronger their emotive influence. And tome, it is in thenuancesofoffprimary colors that the “essentialmusicmay be heard”.Thus, in the landscape, letus visit for awhile and letourselves in tot lity bedrawn into soulfulembraceof thisplace. For it is in this stateof conscious surrender thatwe and the landscape areno longer separate,butone.SonyA7RIV body.Metabones Adapter,Canon70-200mm zoom lens. Metaphors areoneof themostpower- fully expressive elementsof art and the entire human experience, asour brains process and interpret experienceusing metaphors. As such, I seemetaphors as translatorsof visual andpersonal experience into a languageof the soul thatwe hear and feel in the heart. Thus, metaphors becomeour signpostsonour quest to findmeaning in thatwhich lay beforeus, as they guide and informour emotional response to the encount rof a landscape. Itoccurs tome that viewing the landscape in somanyways is simply inner talk, now spoken aloud, and translated into the visual languageof themetaphor and its attendant composition- al arrangement in the image.Comingupon these twowinter cottonwood trees in a canyon in southernUtah, what immediately struckmewas the relative shape anddispositional relation- shipof the two.Theoneon the left standing strong and erect, the treeon the right, mostly sagging to the ground.Taken together, they express strength and courageon theone hand and fear andweaknesson theother.Forme, itwas aperfect expressionof the human expe- rience inwhichwemust face fear anduncertaintywith the strengthofour courage. And, in truth, wenever findour courageuntilwe go looking for it.Thus, for the artist, metaphors areour feelingsmade visible, and, as such, metaphors in visual art represent the fundamental “sign language”ofour soul.Canon1DSMark II,Canon24-70mm zoom lens. This is an extraordinary locationon the SaukRiver inWashington State, andone I return tooften. Its a landscapewhere upon each return, it seemsnothing is the same except the giant granite boul- ders, directing the surgeof the river. On thisoccasion, itwas the endof spring, and the high volumeofwater from the glaciers high above andmanymiles away, create both the swirling rushof thewater, cascading in smallwaterfalls in this stretchof the river, and the extraordinary hues of turquoise, teal, and green in the glaciermeltwater. The forest foliage along the bankof the riveron the far sidepresents a visually compellingmixof both texture and shadesof green. Given these twodynamicsof color, what interestedmewas how the rocks seemed topunc- tuate the separationof the river and forest. It is the case that huesof green create and feeling of calm and tranquility, which iswhy artwork in healthcare facilities isoften found topossess them. In addition to the striking color contrast, is the implied contrastof this calm setting with the roarof the surging river.Every time I look at this image it remindsmeof a quote Iwrote inoneofmyphotography books:“All I everneeded to know about color, I learned fromnature.”SonyA7R body,Metabones Adapter,Canon24-70mm zoom lens.
