HEINEMANN Frameable Calendar and Landscape Photography Tutorial 2025 ™ Fog in an image is such a powerful and meaningful metaphor for concealing and hiding.Fog dissipates: the veils at last being lifted to reveal what has been hidden; that is,enlightenment. It is also one of the most effective light conditions to establish mood, within which the metaphorical content can reveal and express itself.Perched atop a roadside snowbank in GrandTeton National Park, Wyoming, I spent almost an hour watching and waiting for what was initially a near total fog bank with only a few glimpses of the mountains, to gradually clear and expose them in their full glory, magically embroidered with lacy sunlight. I used a telephoto lens @200mm to flatten and compress the scene from near to far, creating a degree of abstraction that adds more drama and dynamic tension to the image.Patience is a required skill of the successful landscape photographer, and, an acquired skill that serves us well in all aspects of our life.As such, expressive fine art landscape photography is so much more than just taking pictures, as it is truly life enhancing.Nikon FE2 body,Nikkor 80-200mm zoom lens,Velvia 50 Film. F/16.1/30th second. This image was shot on a hill above my uncle’s wheat farm in the famous Palouse Hills ofWashington State. In my youth I spent weeks in the summer working the wheat harvest.During that time, the landscape is almost exclusively hues of earth tones, golden wheat and finely etched lines and textures created by the combine harvesting. This image was taken in late May, about a month before the green winter wheat begins to turn golden, and ready to harvest in earlyAugust.Although I love to photograph the harvest, late spring offers far more dramatic and compelling imagery because the landscape possesses considerably more color contrast, as is seen in this image. And, interestingly enough, this color contrast also creates the additional dynamic tension fashioned by the sensual shapes, forms, and textures of this vibrant and fully alive, verdant landscape. In producing a compelling image, the challenge in composing, like a performance all of the instruments in a good symphony, is to bring harmony and balance to all of the compositional elements in its visual design.Nikon FE2 body,Nikkor 80-200mm zoom lens,Velvia 50 Film.F/22.1/25th second. Why do photographers jump at the chance to go out and take pictures on beautiful, sunny days? Because a sunny day is such an effusive expression of the exuberant joy and happiness we expe- rience in its presence. The brilliance of its radiant light pierces the outer form of our being and activates within us the deepest and most essential realization of our joy of living, our gratitude for being alive. As such, sunny days are a mirror of sorts, in which we see a purpose and meaning for our lives, a joyous cup of ecstasy that runneth over. All this said, photographing the landscape on a cloudless, full sun days always presents creative challenges. In such light conditions, the colors can be overly saturated and any details in the shadow all but non-existent,creating an image that possess little visual impact.Fortunately, in this case, I was presented with brilliant direct light that created no shadows on the one hand, and a wonderful contrast of luminous warm and cool colors, a condition which always brings life and emotional impact t a land- scape image. In creating an expressive, impacting image, the essential first consideration, and the basis upon which any following technical considerations are made, is the assessment of the nature and quality of the ambient light and how it will render the subject matter. From that, all else in the image creation process flows.Pentax 67 body,Pentax 135mm lens,Velvia 50 Film.F/22.1/60th second. Light is the brush that paints the landscape. It is light that reveals shape, form, color, texture, and pattern.Above all, light is the visual music, which, like a movie soundtrack, is the means by which the artist invites the viewer to share the artist’s deeply personal expe- rience of that moment, as well as that which the landscape and that uniquely captured moment reveals about the viewer. This image was created in moments leading up to sunset in theWhite Sands National Monument in New Mexico. It is a landscape that possesses the most magical and often surreal light I have ever witnessed.Fundamental to the characteristics ofWhite Sands is how light cast on the dunes reflects back to the sky and clouds in seemingly unending echoes of light between earth and sky. From this dance come infinite color nuances and the expressive moods that paint this special place creating a wonderful palette of pastel hues. Thus, as Picasso realized, what is imagined already exists in the field of all creation, for if it didn’t already exist, how could we even imagine it? Creativity isn’t about “creating something.” It’s about finding it where it already exists—in that field of all creation—if we would only have the knowing to look there.Canon1DS Mark II,Canon 70-200mm zoom lens.
